Memphis Handicappers Tournament History

In 1959, a group of prominent Memphis golfers and businessmen led by Sam Cooper, Richard Harwood, Mark Vorder Bruegge, Don Drinkard, Richard Block and Herbert Lichterman founded the Memphis Handicappers Golf Tournament, which would raise funds for children of The United Cerebral Palsy Day Care Center, now Harwood Center, Inc.

The Memphis Handicappers Golf Tournament, the oldest charity golf tournament in Memphis, began with the idea that average Handicap golfers could help children with special needs. The concept was to blend fun and fellowship with good works. In the early years there was a formal seated dinner after the tournament with such famous speakers as: Joe Williams, Kyle Rote, Frank Gifford, Charlie Conerly, Don Meredith, Sonny Jurgensen, Joe Theisman, and many more.

While the years have passed and Harwood Center has grown, the format of the Memphis Handicappers Golf Tournament has not changed. A memorable day of golf with all the amenities of The Memphis Country Club continues to raise funds to support Harwood Center.
