Who We Serve

Harwood serves students with diagnoses such as autism spectrum disorders, Down syndrome, cerebral palsy, visual and hearing impairments, prematurity, and spina bifida.  Its Downtown and East Memphis locations permit Harwood to serve children from all areas of Shelby and surrounding counties in Western Tennessee. Of the 110 children Harwood served from July 1, 2005 through June 30, 2006, 62% were male and 38% were female.  Of that same population, 38% were African American, 4% Asian/Pacific Islander, 2% Hispanic, and 56% White.

Children are eligible for services through Harwood Center if they meet the eligibility guidelines for Tennessee’s Early Intervention System. To meet these guidelines a child must be:

1. Under the age of three
2. A resident of Shelby, Tipton, Fayette or Lauderdale Counties
3. Delayed by 25% in two areas of development or 40% in one area of development. These areas include:

Physical development (gross and find motor abilities)
Cognitive development (learning and thinking)
Communication (understanding and using words)
Social-emotional development (relating to others)
Adaptive development (self-help skills such as feeding)
Or
Have a diagnosis that results in a delay
