Harwood Center Celebrates 50 Years!

50th Anniversay Celebration
Former students Matthew Abis (left) and Kyle Hassell (right) assist Woody Harwood in cutting the 50th Anniversary Birthday Cake.

Anniversary to focus on awareness.

In its 50 year history, Harwood has evolved from its simple beginning in 1957. It has grown from a part-time day care program into a year round comprehensive program serving over 100 children ages birth to three annually. Its students, with diagnoses such as Down syndrome, cerebral palsy, visual and hearing impairments, spina bifida, and autism spectrum disorders receive individualized educational services through Harwood’s center-based, community-based, and in home programs.

The yearlong celebration began with a birthday party at 10:00 a.m. on January 23 at Harwood Center, 711 Jefferson Avenue. Board members, alumni, current children and families, funders and community leaders have been invited to attend.

The focus of the yearlong 50th anniversary celebration will be raising community awareness of the importance of early intervention and of the availability of early intervention services in our community, including those at Harwood Center. In our community, the full social and economic benefits of early intervention are not being achieved and needs remain unmet. Last year over 2000 children in the Mid-South that should have received early intervention services were never identified.

Other activties planned include:

  • Unveiling a new website and DVD
  • 48th Annual Memphis Handicappers Golf Tournament
  • Recognition of partners in the community
  • Children’s holiday party

For more information regarding the 50th anniversary or early intervention services, please contact Harwood Center at 901-448-6580.

Food & Beer Tasting

Annual Food & Beer Tasting

The Fresh Market and Southwestern Beverage Distributing teamed up to sponsor the Third Annual Evening of Food and Beer benefiting Harwood Center on October 17, 2006. Tickets to the event entitled guests to sample prime rib, shrimp cocktail and other delightful hors d’oeuvres, as well as distinctive cheeses and desserts, all of which were matched with an array of imported and micro brew beers.  In addition, Do and Beauty Shop provided sushi. The crowd of 200 included both new and longstanding supporters of the Center. Proceeds will benefit the more than 100 children and families served annually by Harwood Center. Special thanks to Delta Foremost Chemical Corporation for printing the invitations and flyers.
