Program for Children with Developmental Disabilities
Children may attend the Center two or three days a week. The school operates a full-day, school program providing a quality, early childhood education. Children may receive therapy services while at school. Harwood employs a speech/language therapist who delivers individual language therapy to children needing this service and provides assistance to parents and staff as they work to improve the communication skills of all children attending the Center. These services are provided at no cost to eligible families.
Because of Harwood’s unique physical environment -- its main location is housed within the University of Tennessee’s Boling Center for Developmental Disabilities and a satellite class is located within the Memphis Jewish Community Center – Harwood’s center-based students are able to interact on a daily basis with typical children from the University of Tennessee Health Science Center Childcare Program and the Jewish Community Center Preschool. Its licensed teachers provide an individualized, 12-month program for children in all areas of development.
UT’s Boling Center houses a University Center for Excellence in Developmental Disabilities, Education, Research, and Service, in the same building as Harwood’s Downtown facility. Students training at UT and other area colleges and universities in a wide variety of disciplines, including medicine, nursing, social work, psychology, nutrition, speech therapy, occupational therapy, physical therapy and education, receive clinical training at Harwood and enrich Harwood’s program by their participation in training experiences.
